All Russians Love Birch Trees (Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt)

This book has become one of the most important novels of young German literature over the past ten years. The story of Masha, the author´s alter ego, speaks for the whole generation of refugee children. For her and her friends, the country of origin and nationality are somewhat obscure categories: these people can, after all, survive everywhere. Nowhere in the world is there a place they could call a real home. Moreover, the novel describes, in a terribly comprehensible manner, the way in which, in the author´s words, "ethnically motivated violence is emerging and manifested as it is possible to prepare the ground for pogroms within weeks.
